Speeding drivers clocked at 164mph

Drivers have been clocked speeding at 164mph on the UK’s roads, with the police branding them “selfish.” Over 24,000 vehicles have been caught on camera travelling at speeds above 100mph between 2019 and 2023, according to police data.

One vehicle on the M25 in Kent and another in Greater Manchester were found to have been driven at 164mph, while cars in London and Humberside were found to be going 163mph. The consequences of high-speed crashes, Ch Insp Craig West, head of roads policing at Kent Police said, can be “devastating for families and friends.”

A BBC freedom information request to police forces in the country revealed some of the highest recorded speeds over a five-year period. Of the 45 contacted police forces, 27 provided their data.

Greater Manchester revealed that one speeding driver was recorded travelling at 164mph on the M62, and using a cloned number plate. Kent police were unable to trace the driver of a Seat Leon driving at the same speed on the M25 in Swanley in 2022. Both drivers were clocked at over double the national motorway speed limit of 70mph.

A Porsche driver was given a six month ban after being caught speeding at 163mph on the M1 in north London at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, while another driver who was found to be travelling at the same speed in Humberside received a four-month disqualification and a £950 fine. Police in South Yorkshire caught one speeding driver at 162mph in 2019. They issued the driver six penalty points and fines of £1,210.

“There’s no excuse for those who risk the lives of others through speeding,” a spokesperson for the Department for Transport said. “We continue to assess how motorists can benefit from the latest technology, ensuring journeys are safe, reliable, and cut emissions.”
