East London bus depot to see over 300 bus drivers strike

Over 300 bus drivers on seven routes will strike at an east London depot over concerns that driver fatigue is affecting safety, according to their union. Members of Unite are set to strike at the Bow bus garage run by Stagecoach’s East London Bus & Coach Company the following Fridays: 17th  April, 24th April, and 15th May.

According to Unite, the drivers were not given “adequate breaks,” had additional weekend work, and insufficient time between shifts to recuperate. Drivers, it added, had reported “near misses.” The strike comes after previous industrial action in March.

“Schedules, driver duties and rotas are compiled strictly within the law” and with safety being considered, according to a spokesperson for Stagecoach, adding that it remains “comfortably within agreed” limits. This is despite recent changes to routes.

The strikes will affect 8, N8, 25, N25, 425, 205, and N205 routes which operate from Bow bus garage and go to central London and Westfield Stratford shopping centre. TfL said that the 25 and 425 will run a near normal service for most of the day, adding that the other routes will likely “be severely delayed and subject to cancellations.”
