Venice bans British man and girlfriend from centre
A British man and his girlfriend have been banned from the historic city centre of Venice after they jumped into the Grand Canal. The 35-year-old and his 25-year-old partner were each fined €450 (£388) and ordered to leave the lagoon city for 48 hours, Italian media revealed.
Gondoliers saw the pair bathing, reporting them to the authorities. They had been celebrating the end of a romantic getaway, according to reports.
Local rules in Venice ban “acts contrary to decorum when bathing in the city’s waters.” “The order, which was immediately enforceable, effectively put an end to their holiday,” the city council said in a statement. “The order, which was immediately enforceable, effectively put an end to their holiday,” the city council said in a statement. I would like to thank the gondoliers for their cooperation and for promptly reporting the matter,” said the city’s vice mayor Elisabetta Pesce, praising the arrest.
“The municipal administration is committed to firmly combating disrespectful and uncivil behaviour, because protecting Venice means defending the dignity of a city that is unique in the world.”
This follows a recent crackdown on tourists amid wider backlash against overtourism in Venice. The local council has banned over 1,000 people from the city centre since the start of the year. The centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A Facebook group known as Venice is not Disneyland” expressed outrage at the “senseless and dangerous” actions. “We don’t want these disrespectful tourists,” wrote one user.
