Messi among Biden Presidential Medal recipients
Inter Miami and Argentina star Lionel Messi was among the latest recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President Joe Biden. The 2022 World Cup winner was among the 19 recognised by the president for the prestigious award.
The medal handed to Messi is the highest civilian honour in the US, given to those who, according to Inter Miami, “have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private” endeavours.
The Argentinian footballer has supported healthcare and education programs for children around the world through the Leo Messi foundation and has served as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassdaor.
Messi reached out to the White House before the event, saying that he is deeply honoured and that it is a privilege to be given the recognition. Due to scheduling conflict and prior commitments, he was unable to attend the event but appreciated the gesture and hopes to have an opportunity to meet in the near future.
Bono, Anna Wintour, Micheal J Fox, Denzel Washington, and Magic Johnson were among the others to receive the award from Biden.
