New LEVC Black Cab Set for London Launch in 2027
London’s iconic black cab is getting a new generation, with Coventry-based London EV Company (LEVC) confirming that a successor to its TX range-extender electric taxi will arrive in the UK in the second half of 2027.
The Geely-owned company has released initial design sketches of the new Hackney carriage, although technical details remain closely guarded. The sketches show a familiar overall shape, suggesting that LEVC is retaining the distinctive silhouette associated with the current TX and earlier models such as the TX4 while giving the cab a more contemporary appearance.
The new taxi will have to meet London’s specific requirements for licensed taxis. LEVC says it will fully comply with the Metropolitan Conditions of Fitness, the rules set by Transport for London (TfL) that vehicles must satisfy to operate as Hackney carriages in the capital.
Beyond that, the company has yet to confirm the powertrain, battery capacity, performance or passenger range. The current TX combines electric drive with a petrol range extender, but advances in battery technology mean a fully electric successor is a possibility.
LEVC’s latest vehicle, the L380 luxury MPV, is already a fully electric model and is available with a 140kWh battery offering a claimed range of almost 500 miles. A black cab is unlikely to require anything approaching that capacity, given its predominantly urban operating environment and frequent access to charging infrastructure.
LEVC says the new model will build on its experience in purpose-built taxi design, accessibility and durability. Those characteristics are particularly important for a vehicle expected to spend long hours navigating London’s busy streets while carrying thousands of passengers.
LEVC design boss Brett Boydell said the first sketches were intended to show a cab that remains recognisable while introducing a modern character.
The TX has been part of London’s taxi fleet since 2018, making the forthcoming model the next major step in LEVC’s development of the capital’s purpose-built black cab. More information is expected to emerge before its 2027 UK launch.
