Taster session for citizen scientists in Richmond upon Thames
Habitats & Heritage and Thames Landscape Strategy is set to hold a taster session to provide a “practical introduction” to river surveying and monitoring along the River Thames. The guided taster session will combine short walks with hands-on activities to explore the health of the river, as well as its local ecology and environmental history.
The event is suitable for any adults with an interest in rivers, nature, and environmental monitoring. It will take place on Sunday 26th April between 1 and 3:30pm at End of Old Deer Park car park, check exact location via what3words.
Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a range of introductory surveying activities, subject to the day’s conditions. These could include testing the water quality, sampling some of the freshwater invertebrates, citizen science monitoring, and exploring wet woodland habitatas.
Some of the core activities from the taster session will include water quality testing using Hanna checkers, learning about the history of London’s sewer system, including outfall sites and their ecological context, and participation in the nationwide citizen science programme Big River Watch.
The taster session will involve a great deal of walking, standing, and bending, and participants are advised to wear wellies or sturdy footwear, since some of the activities will take place near to the water. If you would like a slightly shorter version or one explicitly aligned to the council’s accessibility or safeguarding standards, Richmond council says it can be revised accordingly.
