Booking a driving test changes come into effect

From 12th May, booking a driving test has  changed, with an aim at preventing slots from being bought in bulk and resold, as well as reducing the long waiting lists of as much as six months. Now, only the learner themselves will be able to book, change, or swap their own driving test, an not anyone else.

Previous rules meant that an instructor could book on behalf of their pupil but that has now been banned. A test that has already booked by an instructor before that date will not be affected.

The BBC found in December that some driving instructors had been offering as much as £250 per month to sell their login details to those who booked tests in bulk, before reselling them to learners for as much as £500 per test. The standard rate for a driving test is £62 on a weekday and £75 on an evening, weekend, or bank holiday.

Since 31st March, only two changes are allowed after booking a driving test, down from the six allowed by the old rules. This includes changing the ate or time, test centre, or swapping a slot with another learner. If more than one thing is changed at the same time, that still only counts as one and if the DVSA makes a change, that does not count.

A learner will have to book a new driving test if they need to make more than two changes and if they cancel at least ten working days before the test date, they will be refunded.

As of 9th June, learners will only be able to move a test to one of the three nearest test centres to where they have booked it. Click here for more information about the changes and here if you are planning on booking a driving test.
