Speeding fines hit four-year high
Speeding fines in the UK have reached a four-year high, with London seeing a surge in fines. Some boroughs in the capital have reported a rise in tickets of over 1,500%. Across the country, West Yorkshire tops the charts for total fines issued, followed by Devon & Cornwall and Warwickshire.
One reason for the increase in speeding fines is the expansion of 20mph zones as well as an increase in the number of cameras.
The figures, obtained by road and safety technology firm OOONO through a FOI request cover 24 UK police areas. They show a sharp rise in enforcement and reveal the regions issuing the highest number of penalties. These were:
- West Yorkshire – 384,219 (up from 340,003 In 2023/24 – up 13%)
- Devon & Cornwall – 184,242 (up from 131,341 In 2023/24 – up 40%)
- Warwickshire – 177,373 (down from 207,549 In 2023/24 – down 15%)
- West Midlands – 147,070 (up from 87,908 in 2023/24 – up 67%)
- Nottinghamshire – 99,067 (up from 93,519 In 2023/24 – up 6%)
The number of speeding fines issued was up in 22 of the 24 police areas in the FOI request with only Warwickshire and Durham seeing a reduction. The former had the greatest decrease thanks to a temporary average speed camera on the M6-M42 Southbound link n Water Orton in 2023/24 that pushed its figures up that year.
But it is in the capital where the most pronounced rise has been found. In London, a total of 778,600 speeding fines were issued. London has seen an expansion of 20mph zones and increased camera enforcement, driving a rise in fines. Kensington & Chelsea saw a 1,507% year-on-year increase while Lambeth recorded a 295% rise.
