Exhibition in support of Shepherds Bush homeless charity

An exhibition will support homeless charity The Upper Room in Shepherds Bush with donations from the sale of artwork going to support it. “Art buddies” Micheal Haran and Paul Mulvey staged the joint exhibition of their “bold, dramatic paintings” with the charity benefiting.

Thanks to a cut of sales from the show to support its work for homeless people and ex-offenders, £350 has already been donated.

“I spent two and a half years in the Amazon, where I studied shamanism, and met my wife,” said Micheal, 57, of St Stephen’s Avenue, Shepherds Bush. “I’m very interested in the spirit world, and that influences my art.”

His work is mainly surrealist and abstract images in acrylic and oils, having been created over the past seven years after returning to painting, having studied at the Slade School in the late 1980s before branching out into interior design.

Paul Mulvey, 53, of Notting Hill, who shared the exhibition space in Barley Mow in Chiswick, sponsored by centre tenants Cow & Co and Workspace, has also rediscovered painting after a long spell in graphic design work.

“Returning to art feels great,” he said. “The whole world disappears when you’re absorbed in painting.”

This is Micheal’s fourth event in support of The Upper Room which began at St Saviour’s as a soup kitchen before expanding to encompass counselling, advice and therapy. The one day exhibition also supported The Peru Mission, a charity that works to improve education projects in South America.

More art shows are planned, with one being staged from 10 to 15 August in Mayfair. Visit Micheal’s website for more information.
