Estate playgrounds burst into life across Wandsworth this spring

Young people in Wandsworth will have new spaces to play this spring thanks to a huge investment in estate playgrounds. The investment will see 13 different play spaces upgraded across the borough. The improvements are paid for by the borough’s Neighbourhood Renewal Fund, using funds that the council collected from property developers, meaning it is at no cost to local taxpayers.

Three separate estate playgrounds in the Doddington and Rollo Estates in Battersea are the latest to open following the completion of works. This takes the number of completed estate playgrounds upgraded to six. Several more are “due to be completed in time for the summer holidays,” Wandsworth council said.

The upgrades to estate playgrounds are part of the borough’s Year of Play and Decade of Renewal programmes, “with the emphasis on modern, accessible and inclusive play,” according to the council. Feedback from residents at Wandsworth’s community drop-in event at the Doddington and Rollo estates, along with walkabouts with residents helped shape the upgrades.

This has resulted in an “exciting upgrade” to the playgrounds including colourful nature themed play areas and equipment, interactive games, and inclusive communication panels. New swings, multi-play units, and in ground trampolines have all been installed, with outdated equipment being replaced and new safety surfacing laid, all in response to feedback.

“A strong focus on accessible and SEND-friendly equipment has been central to the upgrades,” Wandsworth said, “there are inclusive roundabouts with ground level access for children using mobility aids, alongside accessible seesaws with supportive seating and extra handrails for greater support.”

Several other vibrant play spaces outside of estates have also sprung open across the borough, including a new playground at Nightingale Square and a brand‑new community play space at Falconbrook Primary School. All of this gives “local children a range of exciting places to explore and enjoy,” according to Wandsworth. Additional upgrades are due to begin at Heathbrook Park Play Area in early May and at Tooting Common Lakeside Play area at the beginning of June.
