Parts of the UK expect to see high temperatures reaching as much as 26°C before “markedly cooler” conditions later in the week, the Met Office said. “Fine and sunny weather will dominate” in many parts of the country, it added, as warm air is drawn northwards across the UK.
High temperatures in the low to mid-20s are expected across England and Wales with sheltered areas, such as northwestern Wales, expecting the warmest conditions of 24-25°C. Lighter winds will make the high temperatures feel even warmer especially across central and southeast England where temperatures are expected to peak at 26°C. These are well above the early April average which is typically in the mid-teens, according to the Met Office.
Northern Ireland and northwestern Scotland however will experience cloudier and cooler conditions including outbreaks of rain, it added.
However, the Met Office adds that it only counts as an official heatwave “if temperatures meet or exceed specific threshold set for each UK county, for at least three consecutive days,” adding that “not every brief spell of hot weather qualifies” as a heat wave.
A rise in temperatures also means a rise in UV levels. While it is early in spring, UV levels “can already be strong enough to cause skin damage,” it warns, “particularly during prolonged sunny spells.”
The Met Office pollen forecast predicts “very high” levels of pollen in the coming days in England and Wales, while Scotland and Northern Ireland expect to see “high” levels which will decrease later in the week.
