Church Street regeneration begins
The regeneration on Church Street has officially broken ground, marking the start of the “major” construction works on the first phase of the street’s Regeneration Programme. The “milestone,” according to Westminster Council, “marks a significant step” in its “long-term investment to deliver high-quality homes, improved public spaces, and new community facilities for residents and businesses.”
The Church Street Partnership, a joint venture between the Council and Mount Anvil is taking forward the first phase of work.
The regeneration programme, developed with the local community, will deliver 1,750 “modern new homes” across the Church Street masterplan area, with the core regeneration set to deliver 1,150 of these homes. At least half of all new homes in the programme will be council homes for social rent or key worker housing at subsidised immediate rent.
Site A, the first part of the construction phase. Once complete, it will provide 430 new homes, half of which will be affordable. All existing council homes will be re-provided, with secure tenants offered an opportunity to return to a “new, high-quality home” at the same rent levels. Resident leaseholders will also have the option to buy a new home with support from the council.
The development will also provide new pedestrian routes, high-quality green spaces, a new playground, and a new Church Street Library. Upgrades to the market will “improve trading conditions, and new jobs, training opportunities,” according to Westminster Council, who added that shop spaces will support local economic growth. In addition, there will be new cycling infrastructure, including cycle storage, “enhanced” cycling routes, and 1,500 new bicycle parking spaces as part of Westminster’s Active Travel commitments.
