Charging cable channels to make EVs more accessible

Wandsworth has announced that residents will soon be able to request electric vehicle (EV) charging cable channels in front of their homes to “make EV ownership more accessible.” The charging cable channels offer a “safe and convenient” option for EV owners without private driveways, without the need to run charging cables through between their home and creating an obstruction on the pavement.

Thanks to funding from the Department for Transport, Wandsworth will offer a £1,000 grant for the installation of each EV charging cable, to “significantly” lower the cost. Through this scheme, the council hopes to support residents who plan to switch to cleaner, low-emission transport, providing an additional option to the 1,600 charging points on street for public use.

When the scheme launches in March, residents interested in having a cross-pavement EV charger outside their property will need to submit an online application and pay a non-refundable application fee of £100. Each request will be reviewed based on a set of criteria, including footway width, safety requirements, and location suitability.

If approved, installation will take place once the £250 installation fee and the renewable license fee of £150 for a three-year period have been paid. The installation fee has been reduced from £1,250 to £250 thanks to a £1,000 DfT grant applied to each application to make the scheme more affordable for residents.

The charging cable channels will be owned and maintained by the council, with residents responsible for installing and maintaining a dedicated EV chargepoint at their home. The scheme is supported by a £175,780 overall grant by the DfT.

If you want to register your initial interest, email electricvehicles@wandsworth.gov.uk with “CABLE CHANNEL” in the subject field and you will be emailed when the application process goes live.
