Police said a man in his sixties from Norfolk had been detained following a “thorough assessment”, adding that he remains in custody while inquiries continue. National guidance means the force has not formally named the suspect, though the BBC understands it to be Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said an investigation had now been opened into the alleged offence and stressed the need to protect its integrity. The force said it recognised the “significant public interest” and would provide updates at the appropriate time.

The allegation relates to potential misconduct during Andrew’s time as a trade envoy. Reports indicate that investigators have examined documents alleged to have been passed to Jeffrey Epstein. It is understood that the arrest concerns the misconduct in public office element rather than other allegations that have previously circulated.

Misconduct in public office is a common law offence that can apply where a public officer is accused of wilfully neglecting duty or abusing their position. The threshold for charge is high and prosecutors must establish serious misconduct.

Andrew has consistently denied any wrongdoing in matters connected to Epstein. No charges have been brought and an arrest does not imply guilt.

Police have not disclosed where Andrew is being held or whether he has yet been interviewed under caution. Under standard procedure, suspects can be held for up to 24 hours without charge, with extensions requiring senior officer authority and, beyond that, approval from a magistrate.

The arrest comes on Andrew’s 66th birthday and represents an unprecedented development involving a senior member of the Royal Family.
