Wagner, an American investor and co-founder of Knighthead Capital Management, took control of Birmingham City in 2023 through Shelby Companies Limited. The ownership group later increased its stake to a controlling position.

In November, the club announced plans for a proposed 62,000-seat stadium, presented as part of a longer-term strategy for Birmingham City’s future.

Wagner has spoken previously about ambitions to take the club back to the Premier League for the first time since 2011. Birmingham are 10th in the Championship, one point outside the play-off places, and host Leeds United in the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday.

The club’s statement said Wagner had received immediate treatment and is receiving ongoing care.
