Defence ties between Canada & Germany to be strengthened
Canadian Prime Minster Mark Carney is travelling to Germany with hopes of strengthening defence ties as well as attracting new business investments, CTV News reports. Carney will visit the Munich Security Conference, becoming his country’s first PM to attend it since Justin Trudeau in 2020.
Speaking to reporters ahead of his trip, a government official said that it is “more important than ever” for Canada to “lean into and strengthen” its relationship, “especially within NATO.” The PM will be joined by National Defence Minister David McGuinty, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation Minister Evan Solomon and the Secretary of State for Defence Procurement Stephen Fuhr.
While there, Carney will hold bilateral meetings with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and Prime Minister of Greenland Jens-Frederik Nielsen. He is also expected to hold a meeting with the leaders of Norway and Germany.
Canada’s government has not given any information about what the business meetings he intends to have, saying only that talks will include investment, critical mineral, defence ties, manufacturing and advanced technology, and energy.
The North American country is set to be the only non-EU nation to reach a SAFE agreement with the EU, aiming to enhance defence capabilities and support large scale projects.
