Pupils step into engineers shoes on Hammersmith Bridge
Local pupils got a taste of the world of engineers on a hands-on lesson for the fifth consecutive year. Year 5 and 6 classes from schools across Hammersmith & Fulham were given hard hats and high vis jackets as they assembled and crossed a 13-metre bridge, competing to create the toughest model bridge from construction toys.
Over 250 pupils from St John’s Walham Green CE primary, St Mary’s Catholic primary, Avonmore primary and Larmenier & Sacred Heart Catholic primary school took part in the fun between 9and 13 March 2026. Since the programme launched in 2022, over 1,000 local pupils have been inspired to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) from Year 2 up to university level.
Each session began with the students getting dressed in “the proper attire,” including hard hats, high vis jackets, and gloves. This is followed by a safety briefing. They were then given two challenges, to disassemble a 13-metre bridge waiting for them, with each pupil assigned a role and then working together to construct and secure the bridge section by section.
They also competed in a K’NEX bridge-building challenge to design and build a model structure that is tough enough to hold as much weight as possible. The Grade II listed Hammersmith Bridge was used as a real-world teaching tool.
