Multi-App parking launched in Westminster

London’s first multi-app parking scheme has bene launched in Westminster to offer “greater choice for drivers,” according to Westminster City Council. This will be a “better deal for residents as operating costs shift to consumers.” It promises to save taxpayers £1.2million a year and unlock new funds to improve local transport links.
The multi-app scheme will also allow for more competition, allowing drivers to choose between apps. This is thanks to a new contract that “puts users first and saves residents money.” Since 1st October, motorists in the borough can choose between three apps when paying to park. These are the JustPark, PayByPhone, and the council’s existing provider, RingGo.
Westminster is London’s first local authority to launch a multi-app system to pay for parking. This will allow motorists to pick the app they prefer, creating “real competition” between providers to “offer the smoothest service and best prices, and maximizing the proportion of parking revenue that goes to improving local transport infrastructure like more accessible pavements, safe cycling infrastructure, and bus lanes,” according to a press release from the council.
Under the previous scheme, Westminster residents contributed over £1.2 million annually through Council Tax to cover parking transaction costs. This is despite the fact that just 4% of parking transactions were from local drivers. The cost will now shift to visitors who make use of the service, “making the system fairer and freeing up vital funds to improve transport across the city.”
