Wandsworth is planning to celebrate LGBT+ History Month “in style” with a wide range of events planned.

LGBT+ History Month is celebrated in February to reflect on the history and culture of the LGBT+ community and its contributions. It has ran for over two decades, raising awareness and educating people about the past.

Across February libraries all over the borough will host events to celebrate LGBT+ History Month. Libraries are a “hub for learning, reading, and connection, as well as having a wide offering of culture, heritage and art events,” says Wandsworth. Mama G will host bright and colourful sing and story time events, with stories and a themed craft session in Tooting Library, as well as an LGBT+ Poetry Evening where you can share your own poetry in the open mic sessions and “hear from top diversity and inclusion poets.”

Wandsworth is the Mayor of London’s Borough of Culture until March 2026. As part of the occasion, there will be events throughout the borough focusing on the LGBT+ community’s rich culture and history.

All throughout the month of February, Queer Wandsworth Exhibition will highlight fragments of lives through objects, photos, film, recordings, print culture, and archive materials, including performance and drag traditions rooted in music hall culture, and Pride events, queer nightlife in the borough, activist campaigns, and fundraising.

The House of Juicy Couture will host workshops focusing on vogueing and runway fundamentals, as well as an open ballroom session, before finishing up with a Kiki Ball held at The Clapham Grand.

Later in the month a Wandsworth Green Plaque will be unveiled for activist Hanna Barrington and her artist husband Patrick. Hanna was a passionate supporter of LGBT+ rights and took in lodgers through the LGBT+ telephone helpline Gay Switchboard. It’s an opportunity to learn more about the remarkable couple.
