Film studios could be coming to Camden
New “cutting edge” film studios could be coming to Camden amid plans to regenerate an industrial estate in the area into a “world-class” creative district. Camden Film Quarter has submitted plans for a new production studio in Kentish town, alongside new affordable housing, educational hubs, and open public spaces.
The company said it hopes for a “UK-first film studios hub in the heart of the city, capitalising on Camden’s creative talent and bringing opportunities to the community.”
Camden Council approved the plans in March, but the latest submission is having mixed reaction from locals. Some fear that the blocks of flats would be “squeezed into” one end of the development area, and that houses would be “blighted” by the film studios.
Others feared that the proposed heights of the planned tower were “extreme” or unsuitable for other reasons. Some locals have called on the council to extend the period for public feedback, saying that the current deadline of 14th December is too early.
Camden Film Quarter is supported by investment firm Yoo Capital. The company bought the site on Regis Road between Kentish Town Tube station and Grafton Road in 2023. It is also behind the redevelopment of the area near Shepherd’s Bush Market, the new Kensington Olmypia, and has seen its plans to convert Saville Theatre into a new Soho hotel and permanent home for Cirque du Soleil approved.
The plan for Camden would include new educational hubs for the National Film and Television School and London Screen Academy. Developers say the plans would bring 1,370 jobs to the area over the three-year construction period. Camden residents can respond to the plans on the council’s planning portal.
