E-scooters trial coming to Wandsworth

TfL, Lime, and Voi will be running an e-scooters trial in Wandsworth, making use of 170 dedicated parking bays in the borough. The e-scooters will be available to hire there, “all trips must start and end in a dedicated bay,” the council says in press release. Users must hold a valid driving license to hire one and both Voi and Lime will be offering free helmets to anyone who requests  one.

Helmets will be available to collect from Wandsworth Town Hall. You can claim one for free free by emailing Transportation@wandsworth.gov.uk

“This scheme is the only legal way to ride an e-scooter on public roads in the borough,” Wandsworth says. “Private e-scooters remain illegal to use on roads, pavements, and cycle lanes.”

The council says it is “committed to making it easier for people to travel safely around Wandsworth in cleaner and greener ways,” adding that the trial forms part of its “wider efforts to reduce reliance on cars for short trips, helping to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality. Encouraging micromobility options like cycle hire and e-scooters supports our goal of becoming a net-zero borough by 2043.”

There will also be investments into better walking and cycling routes, improved public transport links, and safer streets, allowing residents to have “real alternatives” to driving. If the trial “proves to be a safe and effective option,” the council says, “it could help more people make sustainable transport choices.”

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the trial, you can email the council at Transportation@wandsworth.gov.uk. If you see a poorly parked e-scooter and you’d like it to be removed, you should contact Lime and Voi directly.
