Dolly Parton named Guinness icon for record-breaking achievements

When Dolly Parton was named Guinness icon, it marked another milestone in a career that has redefined what it means to be a cultural figure. At 79, she holds 11 Guinness World Records titles, from the most consecutive decades with top 10 albums on the Billboard country chart to the most studio albums released by a female country singer.
The honour forms part of Guinness World Records’ 70th anniversary celebrations. Craig Glenday, the organisation’s editor-in-chief, described Parton as “a living legend” whose philanthropic work, including poverty relief, medical research, and the Imagination Library free-books campaign, places her in a league of her own.
Parton’s impact has stretched far beyond her Tennessee roots. Since the release of her debut album Hello, I’m Dolly in 1967, she has become a defining figure in popular culture. By the 1980s she was not only a chart-topping artist but also a successful actress, making her film debut in the workplace comedy 9 to 5. Her most recent album, Rockstar, arrived in 2023, and she continues to collaborate with younger artists, recently appearing on a version of Sabrina Carpenter’s Please Please Please.
Guinness World Records, first published in London in 1955, has celebrated other cultural icons such as Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. Adding Parton to that list acknowledges a legacy that blends commercial success with a remarkable ability to adapt across generations.
