Barlby new homes site allows apprentices to build careers
Kensington & Chelsea’s Barlby new homes site is allowing apprentices to carve out careers in construction and help to build new social homes in their own community through apprenticeships. Seven apprentices who live close to the North Kensington site have gained experience in trades such as carpentry, bricklaying, drylining, and electrical installation during the construction of the 83 new homes. These homes will include 38 properties for social rent and 10 for key workers.
The apprentices roles were arranged through Kensington & Chelsea Council’s new development contractor Hill Partnership Ltd to “boost employment and skills” in the borough. An additional 12 local people have been employed to work at the Barlby site during the construction process.
“Not only is our new homes programme providing new Council-owned homes for the first time in a generation,” Cllr Kim Taylor Smith, lead member for employment, culture and economy, said, “but it is also creating a legacy of skills and opportunities that I hope will benefit residents and the borough for years to come.”
In addition to the new homes, the Barlby Road development will also include a multi-use spots hall which will be available for use by pupils of the nearby Barlby Primary School and members of the local community.
The project is tipped to finish later this year and the first residents are expected to move in by the end of 2026.
