Banksy’s Latest Artwork Stolen in Peckham
Londoners were in for a rollercoaster ride this week as Banksy, the elusive and provocative street artist, unveiled a series of animal-themed artworks across the capital. However, Banksy’s latest piece, featuring a wolf howling at the moon on a satellite dish in Peckham, was snatched within an hour of its revelation.
On Thursday, Banksy shared an image of his new work on Instagram, only for it to disappear almost immediately. Eyewitness Tom Kellow, who was on his lunch break, witnessed the dramatic removal. “They had a ladder. There was one guy on the roof, and the other two were watching the ladder. They saw me filming and got a bit tetchy,” he recounted. One of the men even attempted to throw Kellow’s phone onto the roof, but it luckily bounced off a tree and back into his hands.
This wolf artwork was the fourth in a series of Banksy’s new creations, following a goat perched on a wall near Kew Bridge in Richmond, two elephants on Edith Terrace in Chelsea, and three monkeys swinging on a railway bridge in Brick Lane. Each piece, crafted in Banksy’s signature black silhouette style, sparked widespread intrigue and speculation.
Banksy’s press team confirmed they “believed” the satellite dish had been stolen, and the Metropolitan Police reported being called to the scene but had made no arrests as of yet (Artnet News). Despite the swift disappearance of the artwork, the incident has added another layer of mystery and excitement to Banksy’s latest series.
This wave of new street art has captivated the city, blending urban architecture with imaginative animal figures. While the deeper meaning of these works remains ambiguous, many speculate they could be commenting on current socio-political issues, a hallmark of Banksy’s work.
For now, the whereabouts of the wolf artwork are unknown, but the buzz it generated will undoubtedly keep Londoners talking. Stay tuned as the city eagerly awaits the next move from this enigmatic artist.
