Alton Estate renewal plan to be put to ballot

Residents of Wandsworth will have a chance to have their say on the ongoing renewal plans for the Alton Estate in Roehampton. The council is encouraging eligible residents to learn more about the proposal and “ensure their voices are heard in this vital decision about the future of their homes and neighbourhood.”

“We recognise the historical challenges faced by the Alton Estate and are committed to delivering improvements that benefit both current and future generations who make it their home,” the council said. “A revised and significantly enhanced masterplan is now nearing a decisive stage, which aims to address long-standing issues and provide high-quality, sustainable housing and community facilities including a new library.

Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council commented: “Our updated plans for the Alton are addressing the need for investment to create high-quality, well-maintained homes and facilities for generations to come. We’ve listened to what people have said and we’re confident that this next phase of the Alton Renewal Plan shows we’re committed to serving the real needs of residents.

“We now ask residents to review these new masterplan proposals and cast their vote in September – each and every vote counts and the decision will determine how we move forward with transforming the estate for everyone.”

The revised proposed “masterplan,” recently published and approved by the Council’s cabinet on 16th June, marks a significant step forward.

Key highlights of the new proposals include:

  • Increased affordable homes: A core pillar of the revised plan is a substantial increase in genuinely affordable homes, addressing the critical housing needs of the borough and ensuring more Alton residents can remain within their community.
  • Enhanced community facilities: The masterplan outlines improved and expanded community facilities, designed to foster an even stronger sense of belonging and provide vital resources for all residents, from new youth spaces to accessible community hubs.
  • Modern replacement shopping parade: A brand-new shopping parade is proposed, offering modern retail spaces that will bring convenience and vibrancy back to the heart of the estate.

The resident ballot provides residents with the direct opportunity to shape the future of their homes and neighbourhood and will be open between 22nd September and 16th October. What is referred to as the ‘Landlord Offer’ will be delivered to all eligible residents in early September.
