VE Day 80th Anniversary: Community Celebrations coming to RBKC

Kensington and Chelsea residents are being encouraged to come together for the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day on Thursday, 8th May. To make celebrations easier, the Kensington and Chelsea Council is offering grants of up to £500 for local community events, along with free road closures and parking suspensions to support street parties across the borough.

This year, the council has streamlined the application process, making it quicker for charities, community interest companies, residents’ associations, faith groups, and voluntary organisations to apply for funding. Those interested can request a VE Day application form by emailing VoluntarySector@rbkc.gov.uk. Events must take place within the borough, celebrate veterans, and be held between Friday, 2nd May, and Monday, 12th May. More details on the City Living, Local Life grant process are available on the council’s website.

For those keen on hosting a VE Day street party, the council has created a dedicated guidance page and road closure application form to ensure events run smoothly and safely. The deadline for street party applications is Friday, 11th April, at noon.

Cllr Sarah Addenbrooke, Lead Member for Communities and Community Safety, highlighted the importance of the occasion:

“On the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we honour and remember the resilience and sacrifice of those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.

“We’re making it easy for communities to hold street parties in the borough with help from our events team and small grants. I encourage everyone to take the chance to come together as a community to celebrate and mark this historic occasion.”
