Union warns bus workers may strike on same day as Tube drivers

A union has warned that bus workers may strike on the same day as London Tube drivers in the coming months, the Evening Standard reports. Members of Rail, Maritime, and Transport union (RMT) who work on the Tube are expected to strike for two days in April, May, and June in a working hours dispute.

Tube strikes that expected to cause disruption on the Underground next week have been called off, with around 1,800 drivers who belong to the RMT union originally expecting to walk out from midday on Tuesday for 24 hours and again from midday Thursday.

The RMT announced that this had been suspended following “progress” in its discussions with TfL. The strike had been called in protest at proposals for a four-day week for Tube drivers.

Now, Unite has announced its members working for TfL as bus station and network traffic controllers are being balloted for industrial action following a dispute around rosters. The ballot will close on 13th April and Unite has said that any strike action could overlap with RMT’s plans.

“Our hardworking members at TfL do an important role in keeping bus passengers safe and services running well, but they have been rewarded with rota changes that will severely impact their work/life balance and even leave them at risk of being disciplined for a situation not of their control,” General secretary Sharon Graham said. “This situation is unacceptable and TfL must change course or face a highly disruptive strike. Our members at TfL have the union’s full unwavering support during this dispute.”
