Step-free access improves accessibility at Battersea Power Station
A new step-free entrance to the tube station at Battersea Power Station has opened, giving riders on the tube a second fully accessibly entrance for the Northern line station. The new entrance, TfL says, “provides quicker and more direct access to the station for those travelling to and from the riverside neighbourhood’s new pedestrianised high street, Electric Boulevard, as well as improving links for residents in the wider Battersea area.”
The step-free entrance has two escalators and a lift, allowing for additional capacity, and helping to future-proof the station for a projected increase in rider demand. Funding came from Battersea Power Station (BPS), TfL, the Greater London Authority (GLA) and Wandsworth Council.
The Zone 1 tube station at Battersea Power Station opened on 20 September 2021 alongside the Northern Line Extension’s other new station at Nine Elms. Since then, the two step-free Zone 1 stations have given a “huge boost to the area’s connectivity,” allowing for reduced journey times and helping to support the ongoing delivery of around 25,000 jobs and over 20,000 new homes.
Over the past year, this extension has seen 13.4 million journeys, at the top of TfL’s estimates from previous modelling. Battersea Power Station is the busier of the two, seeing 9.4 million trips over the past year, compared with Nine Elms’ just over 4 million.
