Solar panels to be fitted to new-builds by 2027

Nearly all new homes in England will have solar panels installed during their construction by 2027, the government has announced. This comes after Prime Minister Keir Starmer rejected criticism from Tony Blair about his net-zero policies.
New properties by 2027 will be legally required to have solar panels on the roof under the new plans. The policy will likely add between £3,000 and £4,000 to building a home. But it is expected to save homeowners over £1,000 on their energy bills every year.
The government has set a target of 1.5 million homes by the end of parliament. The Labour party has also promised to decarbonise the country’s electricity grid by 2030 and reduce energy bills by £300 annually. Government-funded loans and grants to install solar panels on existing homes are also on the agenda.
“We have always been clear that we want solar panels on as many new homes as possible because they are a vital technology to help cut bills for families, boost our national energy security and help deliver net zero,” a spokesperson for the government said. “Through the Future Homes Standard we plan to maximise the installation of solar panels on new homes as part of our ambition to ensure all new homes are energy efficient, and will set out final plans in due course.”
