Senate Republicans aim to block Trump from taking Greenland

Senate Republicans have vowed to prevent any attempt by President Trump to take Greenland by military force. This comes after US officials refused to back track from their demands to take control of the Danish territory at a meeting with diplomats in the White House.

The Senate Republicans were baffled by Trump’s insistence that military force is not off the table in his goals to take control of the territory, with some senators fearing that it could bring about the end of NATO and strengthen Russia in its ongoing war with Ukraine.

Thom Tillis from North Carolina and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska plan to visit Copenhagen to assure the Danish Prime Minster that the Republican party will strongly oppose any attempt by the President to seize Greenland by military force.

“I’m going to remind them that we have coequal branches of government and I believe that there [is a] sufficient number of members, whether they speak up or not, that are concerned with this,” said Tillis. “The actual execution of anything that would involve a taking of a sovereign territory that is part of a sovereign nation, I think would be met with pretty substantial opposition in Congress.”

Another Senate Republican who requested to be anonymous said that Trump’s rhetoric on Greenland has seen opposition from the party in Congress due to the consequences for NATO.

“You see, more than in other incidents, pushback by Republican senators on this topic,” they said. “I have no understanding how this is an idea to begin with.”

A poll from Reuters/Ipsos earlier this week found that only 17% of Americans support an American takeover of Greenland, with just 4% saying that they believed that using military force would be a good idea.
