Sakurajima volcano in Japan erupts
Sakurajima volcano on the Japanese island of Kyushu erupted “multiple times” on Sunday, according to Reuters. The eruption sent a plume of smoke and ash as high as 4.4 kilometres or 2.73 miles into the air. As a result, dozens of flights had to be cancelled.
The volcano is on the western Island’s southern tip, close to the city of Kagoshima. It erupted at 1 am (16:00 GMT) on Saturday 15th November, according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA). There were two more eruptions from Sakurajima at 2:30 am and 8:50 am.
It is the first eruption in nearly 13 months that reached 4 kilometres or higher, Kyodo news agency reported. Local media reports also said that 30 flights both in and out of Kagoshima Airport had to be cancelled as a result of ashfall and other reasons related to the volcano.
The JMA reported that volcanic ash had drifted northeast after the eruption, saying that it expected ash to fall in Kagoshima and the nearby Miyazaki Prefecture.
Sakurajima is among the most active volcanoes in Japan, with its eruptions of varying levels regularly taking place. As recently as 2019, it released ash as high as 5.5 kilometres or 3.4 miles.
