Poundland blaze shuts Penge High Street as crews work through morning

Before dawn, a fire broke out at a Poundland on Penge High Street, bringing fifteen engines and about one hundred firefighters to the parade. The Penge High Street fire was contained to the shop and declared under control at 8.48am. No injuries were reported.
Cordons went up along the terrace and around twenty-five neighbours were taken to a rest centre as a precaution. Residents were asked to keep windows shut because of smoke. Buses were diverted and the road stayed closed through the morning.
