Old Oak tunnel works for HS2 begins
Tunnelling has begun on Old Oak Common station as work kicks off for a new high-speed railway link to Euston station. This, Hammersmith & Fulham Council says, will “make H&F vital connection point and spur growth in new homes and jobs”
A 1,624-tonne tunnel boring machine is now excavating the route between the two stations, a “major milestone” in a construction project “anticipated to bring economic growth to the area and put Old Oak firmly on the map.”
The new rail line will follow completion of 23 miles of tunnel, 19 bridges, and two viaducts along the HS2 route to Birmingham. The line was originally set to terminate at Old Oak Common but will now complete its journey at Euston, improving connectivity for locals travelling to and from central London.
Over 33,000 people work on building the high-speed rail link, expected to bring £10 billion to the west London economy over the next decade, along with 22,000 homes and 19,000 permanent jobs.
For Hammersmith & Fulham residents, it promises to bring improved interchanges between buses, tube services, national railways, and HS2. 8.4 miles of twin-bore tunnels between West Ruislip and Old Oak Common have already been dug.
