Melania Trump threatens $1bn lawsuit against Hunter Biden over Epstein claim

Melania Trump has threatened to sue Hunter Biden for more than $1bn after he claimed she was introduced to Donald Trump by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Lawyers representing the former first lady said the remarks were “false, disparaging, defamatory and inflammatory”. Biden, the son of former U.S. President Joe Biden, made the comments during a recent interview in which he criticised Donald Trump’s past association with Epstein.

Donald Trump has acknowledged knowing Epstein but has insisted they fell out in the early 2000s over a personal dispute. Epstein died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
The first lady’s legal team sent a letter to Hunter Biden’s lawyer demanding a full retraction and apology or face legal action for damages exceeding $1bn. The letter stated that Melania Trump had suffered “overwhelming financial and reputational harm” as a result of the repeated claim, accusing Biden of attempting to draw attention to himself by invoking her name.
Biden alleged that unreleased files relating to Epstein would “implicate” Donald Trump, claiming Epstein was responsible for introducing the couple. His remarks echoed claims partly linked to journalist Michael Wolff, who has written critically about Trump. However, Wolff’s reported comments were later challenged, and an article that carried the allegation was retracted after lawyers for Melania Trump demanded corrections.
The withdrawn piece originally appeared online with references to Trump, Epstein, and Melania’s early connections, but an archived version now includes a note apologising for “confusion or misunderstanding”.
Alejandro Brito, representing Melania Trump, confirmed that her attorneys are pursuing immediate retractions and apologies. A spokesperson added that the claims have caused “malicious, defamatory falsehoods” to spread.
A profile in Harper’s Bazaar in 2016 stated that Melania met Trump at a party in November 1998 hosted by a modelling agency founder. At the time, Trump had recently separated from his second wife, Marla Maples, while his divorce from Ivana Trump had been finalised years earlier. The magazine reported that Melania initially refused to give him her phone number because he was already with a date.
The legal threat comes as the White House faces growing calls to release the so-called Epstein files — documents linked to the late financier’s criminal case. Trump has previously promised to publish them if re-elected, but U.S. officials said no incriminating client list exists. Further details of the Epstein investigation are available through the U.S. Department of Justice.
