Liverpool Street fire alert disrupts central London services

When the Liverpool Street fire alert triggered an evacuation at around 8:15 am, London’s travel network faced immediate disruption. Transport for London confirmed via X that Liverpool Street Underground station had been closed due to a fire alert, with tickets now being accepted on London Buses to help commuters reach their destinations. No official details have yet been provided on the cause of the alert.

Liverpool Street is one of London’s busiest transport hubs, serving the Underground, Elizabeth line, Greater Anglia, Stansted Express and London Overground. This closure has caused delays on multiple lines, including the Central, Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Elizabeth lines. National Rail has also reported delays of up to 20 minutes on Greater Anglia and Stansted Express trains.

TfL’s official emergency evacuation guidance explains that fire alerts result in immediate station clearance while staff assist passengers with safe exits. Alternative routes, including Moorgate and Bank stations, are expected to see heavier footfall during the closure.

The closure has again highlighted the pressure on London’s central stations. Liverpool Street alone recorded more than 80 million entries and exits in 2022–23, according to Network Rail, which has been carrying out upgrades including new ticket gates and roof improvements.

Commuters are urged to check the latest information before travelling using the TfL Go app or the TfL status updates page. For those requiring step-free access, Moorgate is currently a better alternative, as Broadgate’s step-free route remains under construction until August 2025.

The fire alert at Liverpool Street has caused significant disruption, but transport officials are working to restore services as soon as it is safe to do so. Travellers are advised to allow extra time, follow live updates, and make use of the ticket acceptance policy on buses to avoid being stranded.
