Forest Hill shop fire brings major response as crews work through the night

A Forest Hill shop fire on Perry Vale brought 100 firefighters and 15 engines to the scene. Crews worked for more than three hours to control the blaze in a ground-floor store with flats above.

Crews brought the Forest Hill shop fire under control after more than three hours, but a section of the ground floor and a rear workshop continued to burn into the night. About 15 people left nearby buildings and there were no reports of injuries.

Witness videos showed flames and thick smoke above a skiing and snowboarding retailer on Perry Vale. A 32-metre turntable ladder was used as a water tower to attack the fire from above.

Station Commander Anthony Lewis said the incident would be “protracted” and confirmed crews would remain on site overnight to fully extinguish the blaze. He warned drivers to expect significant traffic disruption around Forest Hill, including along the A205 South Circular, where a large cordon is in place.

Firefighters from Forest Hill, Lewisham, Beckenham, West Norwood and surrounding stations attended. The cause of the Forest Hill shop fire is not yet known. For verified safety guidance and live updates, check the official incident updates page.
