Electrical safety checks ordered for over 1,000 London homes

The City of London Corporation has launched a major programme of electrical safety checks across London homes, after a review revealed that more than 1,000 properties had missed routine testing.

The inspection drive will cover 1,184 homes where checks on fuse boxes, wiring, and fittings have not been carried out for over five years, exceeding the recommended interval.

Action plan to fix delays

Following the findings, the City of London Corporation has informed the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) and submitted a detailed action plan to bring every property up to standard. The authority has pledged to complete all outstanding inspections by April 2026.

Two accredited electrical contractors have been appointed to carry out the work, which will include any urgent repairs identified during testing.

Helen Fentimen, Chair of the City Corporation’s Community and Children’s Services Committee, said:

“The safety and wellbeing of all our residents is our absolute priority.
Everyone deserves to live in a safe, secure, and comfortable home, and we are bringing all our housing stock up to standard as quickly as possible.
We thank our residents for their understanding and cooperation as we carry out this important work.”

Part of a wider investment

The inspection programme forms part of a wider multi-million-pound investment in the City Corporation’s housing estates. This includes:

  • New windows, kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems
  • Lift replacements and fire safety upgrades
  • Energy efficiency improvements
  • General estate upgrades, including landscaping, security, fencing, and waste storage

What residents can expect

Residents in affected homes will soon receive letters inviting them to book appointments for their inspections. Once this round of checks is complete, homes will move onto a regular five-year inspection cycle to ensure electrical safety standards are maintained.
