Cycle Hub to support green travel in Richmond

A new “state-of-the-art” cycle hub has opened at Richmond Station to make it “easier for residents and visitors to travel sustainably while supporting a cleaner, healthier and more vibrant town centre.”
“This new cycle hub is an absolutely top-notch facility for Richmond and a fantastic example of partnership working that delivers for both residents and visitors alike,” Cllr Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, said at the official opening. “I’m delighted the Council has played a key role in bringing it to life. It also reflects two of our key priorities, encouraging more active forms of travel by providing facilities so people don’t need to rely on cars, and continuing to invest in Richmond Town Centre.”
The eco-friendly building features:
- A 60m² living green wall with 4,000 plants and pollinators
- A 1,500-litre rainwater harvesting system
- On-site solar panels providing renewable energy
- Recycled materials
- Smart LED lighting
Thanks to a £664,000 investment from Richmond upon Thames Council, and partnership with South Western Railway, the cycle hub will produce 24,500kWh of renewable energy annually and help to promote “greener travel and better infrastructure in the borough.”
The multi-storey hub is equipped with 24-hour CCTV coverage and provides over 650 parking spaces for bicycles, making it the UK’s third largest facility of its kind.
The hub is part of the council’s vision for a town centre, promising a “cleaner, more welcoming and easier to get around” borough, and “a place where people want to live, shop and spend time both now and for generations to come.”
