Cape Verde becomes second smallest country to qualify for World Cup

Following a 3-0 win over Eswatini, Cape Verde has secured qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. It becomes the second-smallest country, after Iceland which reached the 2018 tournament in Russia, ever to qualify for the competition. The “Blue Sharks” finished top in their qualifying group ahead of Camreon, one of the top teams in Africa.
In the match over Eswatini, the scoring was opened against the home side by Dailon Livramento, with Willy Semedo’s volley doubling their lead. Defender Stopira made it 3-0 in stoppage time.
Cape Verde is an archipelago of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean. With just under 525,000 people, it gained its independence in 1975. Its first attempts to qualify for the World Cup came in 2002.
The Blue Sharks have reached the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) during their debut in 2013 and again in 2023, and are 70th in the FIFA world rankings.
Its 1-0 win over Cameroon put Cape Verde in first place in the group, with one more victory being enough to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup. A 3-3 draw with Libya in Tripoli held them back but the win in Eswatini has now made up for it.
