Attempted murder charge for US woman for alleged pregnancy termination
A woman in the US state of South Carolina is facing attempted murder and unlawful neglect of a child after she allegedly tried to terminate her pregnancy. Rock Hill Police Department said 20-year-old Jocelyn Byrum was arrested on 17th November, revealing during an investigation that she took medication to induce labour while 27 weeks pregnant. She is also alleged to have not rendered any aid for the newborn or call emergency services after giving birth.
The investigation began, according to the police department, on 12th November after a call to assist emergency medical services. A caller stated that Byrum had suffered a miscarriage. When officers arrived at the scene, Byrum reportedly admitted to have taken medicine to induce labour and that she intended to terminate her pregnancy.
South Carolina law outlaws abortion after cardiac activity in a foetus is detected. This is usually after around six weeks. Exceptions are given for victims of rape or incest, and cases involving foetal abnormalities or risk to the mother. In such cases, the limit is increased to 12 weeks. Since the repeal of Roe v Wade by the US Supreme Court, many US states, especially conservative, Republican-led ones, have placed many restrictions on abortion, with some outright banning it.
The Rock Hill Police Department said that detectives had “discovered Byrum knew she was further along in her pregnancy and willingly took the medicine as she did not wish to have the child,” in a statement announcing the arrest.
The infant was hospitalised where they were reportedly in a critical condition. Byrum was taken into custody by police on warrants and has since been charged with attempted murder. She has been denied bond after a hearing on 18th November.
