Annobón, in Equatorial Guinea asks Argentina to annex it

Annobón, an island that is part of Equatorial Guinea, has formally asked to become part of Argentina. The South American country received a formal request from the island’s Prime Minister, Orlando Cartagena Lagar, who called out a severe humanitarian crisis, asking for help amid repression from the Equatorial Guinea government which currently controls it.
The Prime Minister appealed to an alleged historical heritage between Annobón and Argentina, saying that it was once a part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, before it was transferred to the Spanish Crown in the 18th Century. While that interpretation is historically controversial, the PM insisted that the Annobón and Argentina were “united by history,” calling for the ties to be renewed.
In 2022, the remote island declared independence from the African nation but has yet to gain international recognition. A lack of drinking water, electricity, and medical services, as well as reports of systematic violence are among the issues faced on the island.
Historical interest has come from its rich fishing and mineral resources, and its location on a key maritime route in the Atlantic. This could make it a consideration for Argentina to establish a logistical and humanitarian base there, giving the South American country a presence on an additional continent besides its own and Antarctica.
