A40 Westway: Two more weekends of closure

Londoners using the A40 Westway are set for two more weekends of disruption, as TfL extends roadworks to carry out essential upgrades on the 50-year-old flyover. The latest round of A40 Westway closures will take place westbound-only from 30th May to 2nd June and again from 6th to 9th June, affecting traffic from late Friday evening to early Monday morning.

The closures are part of ongoing efforts to replace worn-out expansion joints on the elevated section of the A40, particularly around St Mark’s Road in Notting Hill. These joints are crucial in allowing the road structure to flex with temperature changes, and without proper maintenance, they could lead to more serious issues down the line. By extending the roadworks now, TfL hopes to reduce the need for further disruptions in the future.

Although weekday commuters can breathe easy, since these closures won’t impact Monday to Friday traffic, the weekend diversions are likely to cause delays for those heading west. TfL has confirmed that detailed diversion routes will be in place, and drivers are encouraged to plan ahead or consider alternative travel options where possible.

Notably, all roadworks will be paused during the upcoming bank holidays: from 2nd–5th May and again over the late May bank holiday from 23rd–26th May. Easter weekend (18th–21st April) was also unaffected, offering some relief to holiday travellers.

The A40 Westway is a key artery for West London, connecting central districts with outer boroughs and beyond. As London’s road infrastructure continues to age, maintenance projects like this are increasingly common and necessary. For locals in areas like Ladbroke Grove, Notting Hill, and White City, the Westway works are yet another reminder of the city’s balancing act between keeping London moving and ensuring its infrastructure remains safe and functional.
