Mayor Sadiq Khan has hailed London as the “undisputed global capital for women’s sport in 2025,” after confirming that over 1.4 million people attended some of the biggest events. These included the Women’s Rugby World Cup Final which took place in Twickenham earlier this year.
The Women’s Rugby World Cup Final saw Red Roses England captain Zoe Aldcroft and player of the match Sadia Kabeya inspire England to a 33-13 win over Canada. The event was a sellout with 81,885 spectators in attendance.
It set a new world record for the most attended women’s rugby match in history, breaking the 66,000 who attended the Stade de France for the opening day of the Paris 2024 Olympic women’s rugby sevens tournament, and the 58,498 fans who saw England beat France in the 2023 Six Nations, also in Twickenham.
The World Cup final also saw a record-breaking peak audience on the BBC with 5.8 million viewers on TV and streaming. This made it the most watched women’s rugby union match ever on British television and the most watched rugby match of the year. Viewing figures in total for women’s sport this year in London on free-to-air TV and digital platforms surpassed 20 million this year.
