FIFA confirms Saudi Arabia to host 2034 World Cup

FIFA has confirmed that the 2034 men’s football World Cup will be in Saudi Arabia. Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, meanwhile, have been confirmed to be joint hosts for the 2030 competition, making it the first time that it will be played on multiple continents.

What’s more, three games are planned to be in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, thousands of miles away to celebrate the centenary of the World Cup, the inaugural edition having been in Uruguay in 1930.

The hosts for both tournaments were confirmed at the FIFA Congress meeting after a vote. All 211 FIFA member nations were represented at the meeting via a video link with two separate votes confirming the hosts for both the 2030 and 2034 World Cups as well as the centenary celebrations.

The first selected the three South American nations as the centenary hosts while the second confirmed the other three for 2030 and Saudi Arabia as the 2034 host. Nations voted by acclamation, clapping in front of their cameras via the video link.

All three decisions had just a single voting option, meaning that “all 211 have effectively cast their vote prior to the congress,” according to FIFA secretary general Mattias Grafstrom.

The English FA showed its support for the bids, backed by the FAs of Scotland and Wales. It said that it had received assurance that fans would be safe and welcome in the Middle Eastern nation which has come under scrutiny for its human rights abuses, especially towards women and LGBTQ people.

“After a careful review of both proposals, we supported the two World Cup bids – from Spain/Portugal/Morocco in 2030, and Saudi Arabia in 2034,” a statement from Engand’s FA said. “Both bids are technically strong and meet the Fifa criteria to host the men’s World Cup. Our focus is on ensuring that all our fans can attend and enjoy tournaments.”
