City Rangers to be introduced in Westminster parks
Westminster City Council is set to introduce City Rangers to its parks in a new partnership with the National Park City Foundation. The “exciting initiative” will bring “people together, supporting greening efforts, and make it easier for residents to access nature,” the council says.
Westminster says that City Rangers are a “key element” of its Greening and Biodiversity Action Plan,” developed in response to the council’s declaration in 2023 of an Ecological Emergency. The project aims to “empower residents to take action for nature and support great community initiatives already happening around the city.”
Volunteer City Rangers will be recruited to lead community-based nature recovery and greening projects. A Ranger Coordinator will help connect grassroots organisations with council support, and a small grants fund will support community-led projects, focusing on South Westminster and Pimlico.
The programme builds on the council’s “ongoing successful collaboration with local communities.” Earlier in the year, community groups came together through the Wider Westminster initiative to share best practices and collaborate on greening and biodiversity opportunities. In partnership with Paddington Development Trust, Climate Champions have also worked to “transform North Paddington into a healthier, greener, and more sustainable neighbourhood.”
Applications to become volunteer Rangers are now open. Visit this website for more information.
