Yokohama football team may be sold by Nissan

Japanese car maker Nissan may sell its shares in Yokohama F. Marinos, a football team that plays in J1, the top flight of the Japanese league. The company, based in the same city, is set to make drastic changes, cutting its production capacity and number of employees, parting ways with some of its long-standing assets.

News about the football team comes from Nikkei Asia, with an unnamed source quoted as saying that Nissan is likely to sell its stake in the club and has already approached potential buyers including a “major IT company.” It is expected to narrow down its list of buyers by the end of 2025, with the sale expected to be complete in 2026.

News about Yokohama F. Marinos comes just as Nissan moves forward with its Re:Nissan restructuring plans. In May 2025, it announced around 20,000 job cuts, with seven factories worldwide closing. This is in a bid to streamline its excess production capacity. Since then, it has announced plans to close the aging Civac plant in Mexico and its historic Oppama factory in Japan.

In July, the car maker announced losses of 115.7 billion yen (£583 million) between April and June. It marks its fourth consecutive quarter of losses. By comparison, the same period saw profits of 28.5 billion yen in 2024.

It is also looking to sell many of its other assets. These include the Yokohama headquarters. A report in August showed that a real estate firm has expressed interest in a sale-leaseback agreement for its 22-storey office building.
