Victoria in Australia battling wildfires amid record heatwave
The Australian state of Victoria is dealing with at least six major fires during a record-breaking heatwave, as firefighters work to control the blaze. Two of the fires are at “emergency levels,” broadcaster ABC reports, with multiple communities issuing warnings either to evacuate, watch and wait, or shelter in place.
Fire officials warned that the situation is rapidly changing, asking locals to keep up to date on the latest warnings. The Bureau of Meteorology said that parts of the state of Victoria have seen all-time high temperatures. One area reported 48.9C while Melbourne recorded 41C. Two of the fires were reportedly at emergency levels, while a third was causing “significant concern.”
There was a danger that one of the fires could cause ember showers “which can create more fires in front of the main fire,” Country Fire Authority (CFA) chief officer Jason Hefferman told reporters.
Health officials have warned that prolonged heat has significant health risks, with the elderly, children, and those with underlying health conditions being most at risk, according to the state’s chief health officer Caroline McElnay.
Aside from Victoria, neighbouring South Australia is under alert for “extreme” fire risk.
