England has defeated Latvia as Thomas Tuchel secures the Three Lions qualification to the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. This makes them the first country in Europe to secure their place, winning all six matches without conceding a single goal, and with two more matches to spare.
England took a 3-0 lead in half time in Riga’s Daugava Stadium thanks to Anthony Gordon and a brace from Harry Kane, including a penalty. Goal number four came shortly after half time after a shot from Djed Spence bounced off the leg of Latvian Maksims Tonisev. In the 86th minute, Ebrechi Eze made it 5-0 after coming off from the bench.
The tenure of Thomas Tuchel as manager has so far been more than promising. There are still two games left to play, with the Three Lions facing Serbia at Wembley on 13th November, and Albania away on the 16th. England beat the former 5-0 and the latter 2-0 in earlier qualifier games.
The next men’s World Cup will kick off in June, with the final to be in July. The tournament will take place across 16 cities between the three co-host nations. The draw for the group stages, the largest ever, will be on 5th December with US President Donald Trump expected to join FIFA President Gianni Infantino to decide the first round matchups.
