Trees for Streets & Wandsworth partner to boost biodiversity

Wandsworth and Trees for Steets have partnered, giving residents, community groups, and businesses a chance to sponsor tree planting on their street or park in a bid to boost biodiversity in the borough.

Residents, businesses, and community groups now “have the power to bring more green to their streets,” says Wandsworth. Trees for Streets will enable residents to sponsor a street or park tree through its website. Neighbours can club together to fill their streets with trees through a crowdfunding platform, while businesses can sponsor tree planting as a way to give back to their community.

The scheme is part of the council’s ambition to boost biodiversity, “strengthen habitats and ensure every neighbourhood benefits from greener, healthier streets,” Wandsworth said. It builds on existing progress made, including air quality improvements and the existing tree planting programme of 1,000 new trees every year.

When you sponsor a tree (which you can do via the Trees for Streets website, above), you can suggest a location for it to be planted, which will be considered in conjunction with climate risk, mapping to support areas in the borough and communities that face the biggest impact of climate change.

The borough’s trees team will survey the location to check for suitability, and once confirmed, it will be planted in the following planting season.

“Urban trees play a vital role in helping Wandsworth respond to climate change, by helping cool our streets during heatwaves, help manage heavy rainfall, and reduce the risk of flooding,” the borough said in a press release. “Trees also improve air quality, support local wildlife and boost biodiversity by creating habitats and nature corridors across our borough.”
