Traffic-free Oxford Street later this month

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced that half a mile of Oxford Street will be traffic-free on Sunday 21st September to mark a “landmark” ‘This is Oxford Street’ event. The event will see parts of the iconic road free of traffic between 12pm and 8pm in what is the first event of its kind.

This will give “Londoners and visitors a glimpse of what the street could look like in the future,” bringing together “fashion, food, music, sport, music, heritage, and community in one place,” and “showcasing the best” of the street’s “past, present, and the Mayor’s bold vision for the future.”

It comes as the mayor moves ahead with plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street and “supercharge regeneration” in the area following “overwhelmingly positive” responses from Londoners to plans for the street. The report on the public consultation in June 2025 shows that Londoners and businesses back the mayor’s plans, with almost seven in ten expressing their support for the proposed interventions to regenerate the street, and two-thirds favouring the pedestrianisation idea specifically.

Part of this includes a consultation on proposals to pedestrianise the main shopping thoroughfare on the street, promising to “improve visitor experience and better enable new leisure offers,” including al fresco dining and outdoor events.

Businesses on the street and throughout London have also welcomed the traffic-free plans which aim to boost retail and drive growth for the capital and wider British economy. Detailed traffic and highway proposals are under development to pedestrianise the section of road between Orchard Street and Oxford Circus up to Great Portland Street, nearly a mile of one of the capital’s most iconic high streets. These will be consulted on later this year.
